One of the bigger reasons why I was super keen about spending my holidaze in Sydney was the annual spectacle of fireworks in the city to ring in the new year. I am a sucker for beautiful, irrationally expensive, not to mention dangerous, choreographed pyrotechnics. There's nothing quite like bright lights and loud booms that irk the fragile muscle in our chest one time each year. Then... #NiagaraFalls.
The day before NYE, I found it so crazy to have seen so many people already set up camp at the prime locations for the fireworks viewing. Boy, did they come prepared, tents and coolers and all. The sad part was, I imagine the wait to not have been all that fun because alcohol was strictly banned at all viewing locations. I couldn't help but notice that most of them waiting were Asians, too. I'm guessing only tourists would be that keen to rough it out like that. Truly, people have different priorities. If you ask me if I would ever want to spend the last day of the year sitting in the dirt waiting for a show that's only 20 minutes long at max, it'd easily be a NO.
However, well, would you look at that.
I guess I get it.

We got to Cremorne Point (one of the viewing locations) past 11 so it was no surprise how the place was already crawling with people. I don't have any photos of the scene but videos, I do (I have them marinating in my iMovie atm). It was like a giant street party. A sober street party.
We chanced upon a pretty good spot despite being beside a big tree whose branches dipped into my viewfinder. Then it started at exactly 12 midnight. My eyes were in complete awe that I couldn't be bothered to check if I was taking decent videos. Here are some very lame snaps:
And here are those from the official website's gallery.
I'm not gonna pretend to be all cool about it. I absolutely loved those meagre 20 minutes. It was the perfect ending to the fantastic year that 2012 was and a smashing start to how amazing 2013 will be!
I wonder where I'll be spending the next NYE... better get my camping gear ready.
